Shirk
Shirk basically is polytheism, i.e., the worship of others along with Allah. It also implies attributing divine attributes to any other besides Allah. It particularly implies associating partners in worship with Allah or believing that the source of power, harm or blessings is from others besides Allah.
MAJOR SHIRK
1. Invoking, supplicating or praying to other deities besides Allah e.g. Quran 29:65
2. Intentions, purpose and determination in acts of worship or religious deeds, not for the sake of Allah but directed towards other deities e.g. Quran 11:15-16
3. Rendering obedience to any authority against the Order of Allah e.g. Quran 9:31
4. Showing the love which is due to Allah Alone to others than Him e.g. Quran 2:165
MINOR SHIRK
Any act of worship or any religious deed done in order to gain praise, fame or for worldly benefit, falls under this category e.g. Quran 18:110
THE INCONSPICUOUS SHIRK
This type implies being inwardly dissatisfied with the inevitable condition that has been ordained for one by Allah; conscientiously lamenting that had you done or not done such and such or had you approached such and such you would have had a better status etc.
"Verily, joining others in worship with Allah is a great Zulm (wrong) indeed". (Quran 31:13)
"Verily, whosoever sets up partners with Allah then Allah has forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode". (Quran 5:72)
"But if they (Prophets) had joined in worship others with Allah, all that they used to do would have been of no benefit to them". (Quran 6:88)
Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The greatest sin is Shirk". (Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
